East Timorese President Jose Ramos-Horta was shot by a former soldier who he had nursed back to health two years ago, his family has revealed.

Mr Ramos-Horta's brother says the President recognised former East Timorese soldier Marcelo Caetano as the man who shot him during February's botched assassination attempt.

Arsenio Ramos-Horta says Caetano was shot two years ago and was nursed back to health by the President.

He says he cannot understand why Caetano would have involved himself in the assassination attempt.

"I have no idea because, the President treated him well," he said.

"In 2006, Marcel was shot himself and he needed treatment, and the President organised for his treatment."
